Title My Self : My Other
Gallery Overview Image:
Gallery Overview Blurb: Vipoo Srivilasa’s quirky ceramics gather their inspiration from the shapes, textures and bold colours, characteristic of the Australian environment. Through his vivacious artworks we can see how Srivilasa brings the distinctive Thai ginger jar design with him from the Thailand of his past to the Australia of his present. These jars have since taken on new shapes and the dramatic colours of Australia’s coastlines, flora and fauna he has encountered on the way, demonstrating both the difference in his physical surroundings and his changing identity.

Srivilasa employs strong characters garnered from Thai mythology in his ceramics. In particular, there is the recurring mermaid figure a character that, according to the Thai tale, is stuck between the two oppositional and over powering forces of good and evil. Give this mermaid a touch of drag queen glamour and you have a glimpse of Vipoo’s cheeky alter ego.
