WORKSHOPS

Challenging of unexpected events!

Pro. Chen Bin had organised two workshops for me to run on the morning of Mon 23 and Tue 24 Sep 2007. The workshop were plan for ceramic students from two different classes. However, when I arrived at the Uni on Monday morning it turned out that my students are Environmental Design students who have no experience working with clay before!

I adjusted the workshop to fit with the class skill so they can finish the work within 2.5 hours (my workshop is hands on). I completed the first workshop, giving my postcard (with my signature) and saying goodbye to all the students.  But I was then advise that the same students will be attending tomorrow workshop, and not the expected different group.  I guess the students liked me so much they would no let the other group have a go.

The next day I arrived at the Uni with new idea of workshop.  All ready to go, students all keen, but unfortunately the key to the ceramic workshop had been misplaced! Poor Pro Chen Bin was running around desperately trying to find the key so he can let us in!

I waited with the students in one of the class rooms, and developed an exercise on the spot, based on one of my clay exercises, but replacing the clay with paper and pen.  Pro Chen Bin returned soon with the key, and we were able to get into our workshop.

After all the challenges, I found it was fun and exciting to run workshops in China. The students were all very creative, energetic, keen and a joy to play and work with. A lot of them spoke English quite well, and we were able to easily communicate via clay.
