The Country I Missed 2012

The Art Centre, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok
1 December 2012 - 16 January 2013

Hugo Mitchell Gallery, Adelaide
26 October to 18 November 2017

In this project, Srivilasa collaborative art process engages with the political and social issues of his homeland of Thailand.  Enlisting the help of his fellow residents of the Pottery Workshop, Jingdezhen, China, volunteers were asked to paint two elements onto a tradition soup ‘duck’ spoon. The first was a cobalt blue face the second was the word ‘red’ or ‘yellow’ hidden on the underneath of the spoon.

Now that spoons are made of plastic instead of ceramic, they symbolise the consumerism culture which contributed to the conflict between the Yellow Shirt (old power) and the Red Shirt (new power) political movements in Thailand during 2010 when they engaged in large-scale street protests.

Each spoon represents a person who lost their life in the conflict. Regardless of their political allegiance, Srivilasa wanted to memorialise this incredible loss for Thailand.

The installation of The Country I Missed, was completed with the addition of a plasticine lotus flower made by volunteers and exhtibion visitors. The lotus reflects the Buddhist symbol of enlightenment and purity. By experiencing the ritual of making and completing the installation, Srivilasa hopes a communal spirit will purify and achieve enlightenment.
