Collective Reef 2015

Shepperton Art Museum, Victoria
8 August - 31 October 2015

Collective Reef draws attention to the environmental affects excessive human consumerism and resulting climate change is having on the world’s coral reef ecology.

Srivilasa invited online communities to contribute to his artwork by posting pieces of trash containing white and blue colour to his studio. The colours of blue and white have a strong cultural and symbolic significance that transcends borders, connecting people around the world. This connection is especially prominent in the history of ceramics and in the works of the artist.

As a result of collaborative efforts, donated garbage, most of it plastic, was transformed into artwork that depicted the beauty of living coral that is forced to live alongside human waste and residue

Each ‘coral’ sculpture was placed into petri dish suggesting that these strange hybrids may have been grown in a laboratory, possibly forecasting a terrible future for our coral reefs!
