Monster by Hands 2009

Pong Noi Art Space, Chiang Mai
5-26 April 2009

Srivilasa had the honour of being the first artist in residence at Thai Celadon, a family-owned ceramics factory based in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand.

The resulting unique series of work was co-created by the factory employees. Srivilasa, a studio ceramicist who takes responsibility for all stages of his creative process, was amazed to observe manufacturing that separated the worker from each stage of the ceramics process.

In response, Srivilasa, hosting workshops which offered workers the opportunity to create individual art works based on a monster theme from the beginning to the end.

Launched in April 2009 at Pong Noi Art Space, Monsters by Hands, featured works with photographic portraits of each worker/artist. The exhibition title challenges the perception of the typical industrialised manufacturing process.

I greatly enjoyed creating a reciprocal relationship with the workers at Thai Celadon; they helped make my work, and then I helped inspire theirs.
