Roop Rote Ruang 2008

4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney
Dinner dates 11, 12, 19, 21 June 2008

Roop-Rote-Ruang (Taste-Touch-Tell) Project was a series of dinner parties, hosted by the artist, at various private residences in Sydney.

At each dinner party, Srivilasa cooked a delicious, four-course Thai meal. He also made new, highly decorated ceramic dinner set of 105 pieces. As the meal was consumed, narratives about coral reef beauty, life cycles, degradation and climate change were revealed.

Roop-Rote-Ruang emphasises the role of ceramic plays in the sensory experience of convivial dining. The project embraced the Buddhist concept of ‘Ayatana’, the six channels of awareness. Dinner guests’ senses of sight, taste, smell, hearing, touch, and mindfulness were all engaged as the meal was unfolded.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its art funding and advisory body.
