Art, Wellbeing and Community at Nepean Hospital

I am delighted to have three new public artworks included in Stage 2 of the $1 billion Nepean Hospital Redevelopment.

Located across the new seven-storey clinical building, the works are designed to bring moments of joy and discovery to patients, families and hospital staff.

Healer Superheroes of the Blue Mountains

A vibrant mosaic mural celebrating the everyday strengths we carry within us. Developed with members of the local community and reimagined through my artistic language, the superhero characters extend across the building’s external stairs.

Forest Friends of the Blue Mountains

A vinyl graphic artwork featuring a playful group of happy animals in their natural habitat. Inspired by ideas from Nepean Hospital’s paediatric staff and the building architect. It was created to make the paediatric unit feel friendlier and more welcoming for young patients and their families.

Guardians of the Blue Mountains

A family of ceramic sculptures displayed in the main-entry atrium. Created to welcome visitors, watch over the hospital and ward off bad spirits, the guardians are inspired by animals of the Dandenong Ranges. Each one invites visitors to pause and discover its unique personality.

It is wonderful to see art recognised as a meaningful part of the hospital environment and as an important part of the experience of care.

Member for Penrith Karen McKeown OAM highlighted the role of the artworks within the new hospital: “They help create welcoming, inclusive spaces that support connection and wellbeing for patients, families and staff.”

The new clinical building is expected to be completed later in 2026, with services transitioning into the facility progressively in 2027.
