Mud to Master

Vipoo Srivilasa presents his latest participatory installation as part of Mud to Masterpiece at Maitland Regional Art Gallery.

Vipoo’s installation takes the form of a large shrine housing five deities.
Visitors are invited to actively engage with the work by creating an offering for the deity of their choice, in the form of a Paper Sprite Figure. Extending the artwork through participation and shared experience.

Far from the traditional utilitarian uses of clay, Mud to Masterpiece explores the world of contemporary ceramics, where the boundaries between tradition and innovation are pushed to their limits. Bringing together a dynamic collection of works by bold artists, the exhibition celebrates the transformative power of clay as a medium for experimentation.

The exhibition features the genre-defying work WAVE, which unites the mythic ceramic imagery of South Australian potter Gerry Wedd with the sonic intensity of composer and performer Gabriella Smart and filmmaker Mark Patterson. From large-scale sculptural forms to intricate and otherworldly works, Mud to Masterpiece showcases ceramic practices that move beyond traditional roots and into the realm of the contemporary masterpiece.

Artists featured: Tracie Bertram, Penny Evans, Bonnie Hislop, Juz Kitson, Alfred Lowe, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, Mark Patterson, Monica Rani Rudhar, Ebony Russell, Gabriella Smart, Vipoo Srivilasa, Gerry Wedd and Kara Wood.
