Ten Souls
Vipoo Srivilasa returns to Melbourne with Ten Souls, a new solo exhibition at Scott Livesey Galleries. Marking his first exhibition in the city in four years, the show brings together a series of ten ceramic figures that reflect on the emotional landscape of contemporary life.
Each figure in Ten Souls represents a fundamental human desire: connection, love, safety, purpose, growth, and change. The works are loosely informed by the writing of social researcher Hugh Mackay, whose exploration of shared emotional needs provides a quiet framework for the exhibition.
Rendered in Srivilasa’s distinctive figurative style, the sculptures balance playfulness with a sense of calm and contemplation. They can be read as companions or gentle guardians, figures that hold space for both vulnerability and hope. While visually inviting, the works also offer moments of reflection, encouraging viewers to consider their own emotional experiences and inner lives.
Ceramics plays a central role in the artist’s practice, with a long-standing engagement with blue-and-white porcelain and decorative surface traditions. In Ten Souls, these influences continue to evolve, reflecting Srivilasa’s bicultural experience between Thailand and Australia. Through the use of red clay (terracotta), a material deeply rooted in everyday making traditions in both cultures, the works bring together these references into a personal and contemporary visual language.
