In Diverse Dominion Deities, I explore the fragility of diversity in Australia through four mythical creatures representing cultural, racial, gender and cognitive diversity.
I combined mass-produced ceramic animals with handmade porcelain flowers and blue deities made from air-dry clay. This mixture of materials reflects the diversity of the clay world and acts as an allegory for cultural diversity.
I used Blu-Tack to attach the flowers, deliberately making the connections appear fragile and temporary. For me, this reflects the complexity of cultural integration: different elements do not always fit together easily and require ongoing care.
By embellishing and transforming the original animals, I also explore how cultures coming together can create new identities, meanings and ways of seeing.
