Eleganza Extravaganza Cats, 2023

In Eleganza Extravaganza Cats, I explore Thai folklore through a queer lens, drawing inspiration from Chaiyachet of the Rama II era.

At the centre of the series is Nang Maew, a character who challenges traditional ideas of gender. Although portrayed as a female cat, Nang Maew is traditionally played by a male actor, embracing flamboyance, theatricality and exuberance.

Through these sculptures, I celebrate queer visibility and explore the ways queer elements can appear within classic Thai literature, whether intentionally or not.
