In The Course of True Love, I tell an uplifting story about the ways love can transcend culture, law and tradition.
The exhibition unfolds through ten narrative vignettes representing pivotal moments in world history that have influenced the acceptance of same-sex partnerships. Inspired by Australia’s 2017 same-sex marriage postal survey, I created the series as a celebration of love without discrimination.
I chose bronze for these sculptures because of its strength and permanence, reflecting the commitment people make to one another through marriage and the significance of that union.
1956 Thailand decriminalises homosexual acts. Bronze
1969 The Stonewall uprising that create gay rights movements. Bronze
1971 Society Five, the first homosexual rights organisation is formed in Melbourne. Bronze
1978 The first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is held and the rainbow flag is first used as a symbol of homosexual pride. Bronze
1993 The "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy was enacted. Bronze
2001 The Netherlands became the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage. Bronze
2005 The Simpsons became the first cartoon series to dedicate an entire episode to the topic of same-sex marriage. Bronze
2017 Yes Campaign, a campaign for supporting vote in favour of same-sex marriage in Australian national survey which lead to Australia legalises same-sex marriage. Bronze
2019 The year that the artist married his partner. Bronze
2020 The year that the artist hopes to see Thailand legalises same-sex marriage. Bronze
