Guardians of the Blue Mountains 2026

Nepean Hospital, New South Wales

A family of ceramic sculptures created to welcome visitors to the main-entry atrium of Nepean Hospital.

Inspired by animals and the natural environment of the Blue Mountains, the sculptures imagine a community of gentle mythical creatures. They watch over the hospital, ward off bad spirits and offer comfort, courage and a little forest magic.

Some of the guardians curl together in peaceful family groups, protected beneath a parent’s arms or golden wings. Others gather to listen to the wind in the trees and the songs of hidden streams. The Moonlight Guardians emerge after dark as enchanted, mischievous insects playing beneath the glow of the moon.

Each guardian has its own personality and story. Small details invite visitors to pause and look closely: a little creature quietly escaping from its nest, a guardian humming in its sleep or a group sharing a secret game.

Through their protective presence, playful characters and moments of discovery, the guardians bring warmth and a sense of welcome to the hospital entrance.
